CHAPTER 11

JUDITH

I’m taking a break from sanding when I hear the crunch of gravel. I walk around the house and see the police cruiser come to a stop. He climbs out, looking behind him before directing his eyes back to me. “You got him working for you now?”

“Jason, you have no business being here.” I hold up my hand between us to stop him from walking any closer to me.

He looks downright shocked that I would hire Logan to work the ranch. “Seriously? He’s working here? You’re paying him?”

“That’s none of your business.” I put my hands on my hips, holding my ground.

He shakes his head. “Did he tell you?”

“Tell me what?”

He smirks. “No, he didn’t tell you. If he told you he wouldn’t be here right now.”

“Either tell me what the hell you’re talking about or leave.” I feel the anger rising in my chest.

“I ran a background check on him,” he starts.

“That’s an abuse of your power, Jason, and you know it. You have no legal right to look into anyone without cause and he hasn’t stepped one foot off this property to give you cause.”

“He has stepped off this property and as sheriff, I have a right to know who’s in my town. And he, Logan King, has been gone for fifteen years because he’s been in federal prison.” He points toward the field.

It feels like a shock wave washes over me. Federal prison? He’s been in prison for fifteen years? It all suddenly makes sense. Why he acted like he hadn’t had decent food in forever. Why he acted like he’d never had a drink before. And when we started getting close…it was because he hadn’t been with anyone since me all those years ago. My mouth wants to drop open as all of this clicks inside of my head, but I don’t want Jason to know that I’m taken off guard so I hold my ground. I clench my jaw and cross my arms as he continues.

“Fifteen years ago he and his brother went to make a drug deal. The deal was not only busted, but one person got away. She overdosed and died that night. This is the kind of person you want to keep in your life? A drug-dealing murderer? Instead of me, someone that upholds the law? Who’s done nothing but protect you? Who’s been here for you these last fifteen years? Oh no. You want the high school sweetheart, the guy I couldn’t ever stand against. You’ve probably been humping his leg since he got back, haven’t you?” he screams.

I see nothing but red as I pull my hand back and send it flying toward his face, my palm connecting with his cheek as a loud smack rings out.

He falls back a step, his hand moving up to cover his face out of shock. He pulls his hand away, making sure there’s no blood before letting it fall. He points his index finger at me. “You’re fucking up.” He turns and
